Revised Form I-485, Application To Register Permanent Residence Or Adjust Status, And Revised Filing Locations

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has proclaimed to have revised the Form I-485 which is an application submitted by an individual residing in the United States, wishing to obtain permanent resident status. The USCIS has also announced a change in the form filing locations. This change over has been made intending to move the immigration applications from the Service centers to the USCIS Lockbox facility. The centralization of form filing will put the processing of applications in order. Concisely, the USCIS will be now able to process the applications systematically.

Starting from February 25, 2010, green card applicants ought to submit Form I-485 only to a USCIS Lockbox facility and not a Service Center. Until March 29, 2010, the USCIS Service Centers will put in their efforts in transferring the Form I-485 applications to the USCIS Lockbox facility. The previous versions are restricted to submission only till March 29, 2010, after which, the Form I-485 applications will be processed only if it is dated "12/03/09". The others will be rejected. Once the transition period gets over, the incorrectly filed forms will be given back to the petitioners, guiding them to send it to the correct location.

The Form I-485 may generally be filed simultaneously with other benefit applications. But at this time, a Form I-485 cannot be filed at a USCIS Lockbox facility simultaneously with a Form I-140, the Immigrant Petition for Alien Worker. To get clarified on how to file forms simultaneously, the Form I-140 filing instructions can be referred to.

The application status on whether the application has been accepted will be notified either through an e-mail and/or a text message, if the Form G-1145 has been filled in, and attached to the application. If a permanent resident card holder is found to be involved in violation of laws, he is prone to lose his permanent resident status.
